Timothy Gillam – Pastor

Pastor Tim Gillam

My road to Cornerstone Baptist Church:

I have had the privilege of serving in 3 churches prior to CBC. While at the Empire State Baptist Seminary I was Minister of Music, then Youth Director, then Assistant to the Pastor, and finally Interim Pastor before going to my first pastorate at Calvary Baptist Church in Harford, NY. After 3 years of ministry there I was called to the Maranatha Baptist Church in Sinking Spring, PA. I served Maranatha for 9 years before being called to Cornerstone Baptist Fellowship, in Camden, ME. I came to Cornerstone after reading Psalm 34, and the Lord made it very clear that Cornerstone was where my family and I should be. I came to CBC in 1991 just prior to it becoming a church. Cornerstone and I celebrated 20 years of ministry together on February 1, 2011.

Most influential person in my life:

My Father, Austin E. Gillam. My Dad has consistently led by example as well as by instruction. He has always given me spiritual counsel directly from the Scriptures.

Best book I’ve read in the last year:

I recommend the reading of Slave, by John MacArthur which deals with the word for bond “slave” which is often translated “servant” in our English Bibles. “Servant” really does not convey the mind set of those who were truly “slaves” during the first century. It goes into good detail which challenges us to think like a Greek. If we understood ourselves to be the doulos (“slaves”) of Christ our manner of living and serving would be dramatically changed; for His glory.

One favorite verse:

Psalms 17:15 “As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.”

Pastor Gillam and his wife Barb have two daughters and two grandchildren.

My road to Cornerstone Baptist Church:

I was converted to faith in Jesus Christ in 1986 just after graduating from college.  This began a life-long love of God’s Word and a desire to teach others His precious truths.  Soon after graduating from Tyndale Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth, TX, in 1999 God led me to New England to serve as pastor of Independent Baptist Church in West Stewartstown, NH.  For nearly 15 years I served God’s faithful people at IBC until He led me to Cornerstone Baptist Church in January, 2015.

Most influential person in my life:

Without a doubt my wife, Lauri.  Her faithfulness to the Lord and to me, and her “incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit” (1 Peter 3:4) continually encourages me to be faithful.

A Few of My Favorite Books (Other than the Bible)

The Sovereignty of God by A.W. Pink

This book, more than any other, helped to solidify my understanding of God’s absolute sovereignty.  One of my favorite verses that speaks of God’s sovereignty is Psalm 115:3, “But our God is in heaven; He does as He pleases.”  Pink deals extensively and aptly with various aspects of God’s sovereignty and helps the reader navigate through the difficulties associated with this doctrine.

By His Grace and For His Glory:  A Historical, Theological, and Practical Study of the Doctrines of Grace in Baptist Life by Dr. Thomas J. Nettles.

This is a wonderful book that examines the doctrinal beliefs of several historic Baptist figures.  The chapter on particular redemption was especially helpful.

Your Eternal Reward by Erwin W. Lutzer and The Believer’s Payday by Paul N. Benware.

These books address the much neglected subject of the Judgment Seat of Christ at which all Christians will appear.  If you have never studied this subject it is time to do so; both these books will be of help.

A Happy Old Age by Ashton Oxenden.

This short little book written by a 19th century Anglican Pastor hits the nail on the head.  Aging is no reason to lose the joy of the Lord.  If you are getting older, you ought to read this book.

Favorite Verses

Psalm 96:9

Oh, worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness! Tremble before Him, all the earth.

Ephesians 1:3-6

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He has made us accepted in the Beloved.

Pastor Matt and his wife, Lauri, have been married since December 1987, and have three grown children, a daughter-in-law, and one grandson.
